The town of Delcambre, LA, located about 20 miles southwest of Lafayette, is home to one of the region's most productive shrimp fleets. As such, the town devotes not just one day but an entire weekend to celebrate this local livelihood. Held directly adjacent to the canal, the annual Delcambre Shrimp Festival is made up of the usual fare of carnival rides, arts and craft booths and concession stands.

Activities get under way Wednesday and Thursday nights with carnival rides and concession stands, but Friday evening is the true beginning of the festival. Starting at 6:30pm, a Fais-do-do takes place on the closed off streets with performances by various artists. Around 7:30pm, for an additional admission fee, you may witness the competition and crowning of the newly chosen Shrimp Queen.

On Saturday, the annual Shrimp Cook-off begins at 9 am and by 1:30 pm, the public may sample the varied shrimp dishes for a small fee. Saturday's live music begins at 3pm and by early evening another star will take the stage.

In addition to the carnival rides and arts and craft booths located throughout the site, you'll of course be able to purchase a bevy of shrimp dishes from the dozen or so food booths. The menu possibilities include boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp sauce piquante, shrimp-on-a-stick as well as great local dishes of gumbo, jambalaya, boudin and cracklin's.

Directions: To reach Delcambre, LA from Lafayette, LA, take U.S. 90 east about 25 miles towards New Iberia. Exit onto Hwy. 14 west. You'll drive directly into the center of Delcambre in approximately 10 miles.
